How To Update Your Wardrobe

I am going to show you how to update your wardrobe using a three step process. By doing this you are going to figure out what your personal style is, get rid of what is no longer serving you, and curate a stylish wardrobe that you are going to love. I filmed a YouTube video of me going over this three step process with you in my closet. I will link the video at the bottom of this blog post for you to watch.

Take An Inventory

The first step to updating your wardrobe is taking an inventory of what you currently have. Before you go into your closet and get overwhelmed by the amount of clothes you own. I have simplified taking an inventory by doing two things. First, utilizing the reverse hanger trick. Second, by doing a try on haul for anything that isn’t on a hanger.

Reverse Hanger Trick

If you’ve never heard of the reverse hanger trick. Basically, you take all of your garments that are on hangers and hang the hangers backwards in your closet. Every time you wear a piece of clothing that is on a hanger and go to put it back. Hang the hanger correctly like you normally would, not backwards. After a period of time whichever you prefer three months, six months, and or one year. Go thru your closet and see what hangers are still hung backwards. That means that you did not wear that garment for the extended period of time that you chose. It’s safe to say that you can part ways with that article of clothing and get rid of it.

If you are updating your wardrobe for the first time and have never done the reverse hanger trick. No worries, my next tip will help you in taking an inventory. In the meantime, you can start doing the reverse hanger trick now. Then the next time you go to update your wardrobe you can utilize the reverse hanger trick.

Try On Haul

For clothing that is not hung on a hanger. It’s best to go thru each article of clothing by doing a try on haul. By doing a try on haul you’re basically shopping your closet. You will see how the item fits, whether you like it or not, and if it fits the personal style that you are going for. I’ve found try on hauls to be extremely helpful in weeding out items that I have the most difficult time letting go of.

Make A List

After you have taken an inventory of what you own by doing the reverse hanger trick and try on haul. It’s time to make a list of what you are going to keep, get rid of, repair, and replace.

Keep

When it comes to the items that you are going to keep. You don’t really need to make a list. You’re just going to put them back in your wardrobe and call it a day. You might be inspired to organize things different than from how you had them before.

Get Rid Of

As for the items that you are going to get rid of. You can either throw them away, resell them, or donate them. If they are not in good condition, then obviously throw them away. If they are still in good condition, then you might consider reselling them on eBay, Poshmark or ThredUp. Or if you don’t want to resell them, then you can donate them to a charity or give them to someone that you know.

Repair

As you go through the items in your wardrobe. You might come across some pieces that need to be repaired. For example, a button might have fallen off, a zipper needs to be replaced, and or you might need a hem repaired. Make a list of all the clothing items that you need to get repaired. Include what is wrong with each piece on this list. So that when you go to get them altered, you can point out exactly what needs to be repaired for each item.

Replace

Some of the items that you are going to get rid of, might need to be replaced. Making a list of items that you need to replace is important. Especially if you are getting rid of basic items that you wear often. For example, tank tops, under garments, and or socks. Once you’ve made a list of the items that you need to replace. Include on that list anything that you would like to add to your wardrobe that you don’t currently have.

Go Shopping

The final step in the process, is to go shopping. But before you do. Start, by taking the items that need to get repaired to the tailor first. Then, after you have picked up your repaired items from the tailor. Go shopping.

Take the list of items that you need to replace and items that you would like to add to your wardrobe and make sure that you carry it with you. I like to keep this list in the notes app on my cell phone. Because regardless of where I am at, I always have my cell phone on me. You can specifically go shopping for all of the items on the list in one day. Or you can pick up items occasionally while you are out and about shopping from time to time. It’s up to you, I like to do the latter.
